At J+S Subsea, our commitment to sustainability and innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Kenny Taylor, Russell Gill, and Lewis Cowie from Zero Waste Scotland at our facility in Dyce. The purpose of the visit was to explore practical applications of circular economy principles within the subsea sector — with a particular focus on our flagship initiative, Legacy Locker, and our approach to product carbon assessment.
Demonstrating Circular Economy in Action
As part of the visit, our guests were given a guided tour of our operations, including a live demonstration of subsea connector refurbishment — a clear, hands-on illustration of how Legacy Locker brings circular economy thinking to life. Rather than discarding used components, we refurbish and recertify them, returning them to service in line with stringent industry standards.
This process keeps valuable, often bespoke equipment in circulation, helping to reduce raw material consumption, avoid unnecessary manufacturing emissions, and support the operational needs of our clients more efficiently. It also aligns closely with our clients’ growing focus on decarbonisation, cost efficiency, and asset optimisation.
Legacy Locker: A Scalable Solution for Industry Challenges
Legacy Locker was born out of a clear industry need — the increasing obsolescence of subsea production equipment, extended lead times, and a growing demand for sustainable solutions. Our initiative offers a scalable, practical response to these challenges by:
- Extending the life of critical subsea equipment
- Reducing waste and landfill reliance
- Providing ready-to-deploy refurbished components
- Lowering carbon footprints through reuse rather than re-manufacture
With growing momentum across the energy sector to embrace net zero goals and implement ESG strategies, Legacy Locker provides a viable alternative to the traditional “take-make-dispose” linear model. Instead, it encourages a regenerative, circular model, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible and environmental impact is significantly reduced.
A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future
The visit from Zero Waste Scotland was an invaluable opportunity to align on shared goals and identify new ways to accelerate the transition toward more sustainable business practices within our industry. Discussions covered a range of topics, including collaborative frameworks, data capture for carbon reduction tracking, and opportunities to scale circular economy practices across the wider energy landscape.
“It was a pleasure to welcome Kenny, Russell, and Lewis to J+S Subsea,” said Phil Reid, Managing Director.
“We’re proud of what Legacy Locker has achieved to date and are excited about its potential to influence real change in the subsea space. Collaborations like this help us take it even further.”
Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow the reach and impact of Legacy Locker, we remain focused on partnerships that challenge the status quo and deliver meaningful, measurable progress toward a low-carbon future.
We’d like to thank the team at Zero Waste Scotland for their time, insight, and enthusiasm. We look forward to working together to drive forward innovation and sustainability in our sector — because at J+S Subsea, we believe in engineering with purpose.
